Preservation Projects

2012 Projects

  • We restored a former Chicago & North Western commuter coach to its original appearance. It now provides climate controlled comfort to passengers on our Fraser Excursion trains. Before coming to the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, Car 96 hauled passengers for Chicago’s Metra public transit.
  • Our 80-ton GE Center Cab unit, 2254 (formerly US Army 7858), underwent mechanical and cosmetic restoration (both interior and exterior).
  • Our Rock Island coach received some TLC, starting with the trucks.
  • Our steam locomotive, JS-8419, also received its normal off season inspections and repairs.

2011 Projects

  • Car 3207 was the final Lackawanna coach to go through the shop for rehabilitation. Both the interior and exterior received a much needed makeover.
  • Our steam locomotive, JS-8419, underwent its normal off season inspections and repairs. It is almost ready to go for the upcoming March 5th special photo run.
  • Our ballast regulator was in the shop, receiving some much needed winter work, including a new radiator and new wiring.

2009 and 2010 Projects

  • Our Southern Pacific dining car was in the shop for some repairs and upgrades. The car received new paint, a recoated roof, door and step repairs, and an upgraded restroom.
  • CNW 8646, an ex-Railway Express car turned into a maintenance car by the Chicago and Northwestern in the 1960’s, made its way into the shop. The car received a major restoration, and emerged from the shop as a concession car for use on our Fraser Trains.
  • Our steam locomotive, JS-8419, underwent its normal off season inspections and repairs.
  • Work was also performed on our ALCO S-2 diesel locomotive, 1098.

2008 Projects

  • This spring, our steam locomotive, 8419, underwent not only the typical annual inspection, but also a five-year flexible stay-bolt inspection. This required the removal of much of the appliances, tinwork, and even the cab. This time also provided an opportunity to give 8419 a fresh coat of paint, complete with new decals.
  • Another intensive winter project was the restoration of our Alco RS-1. The locomotive required both mechanical and cosmetic work, and now is being used to pull our excursion trains from time to time.
  • South Shore coaches #38 and 39 were in the shop. 38 received some work in the way of new windows, a recoated roof, exterior painting, revamped electrical and a modern air brake system. 39 received similar work in the way of new windows, a recoated roof, and a modern air brake system.
  • Coach cars 3207 and 3213 were in the shop for the usual annual cleaning and maintenance, and also for brake work. The old UC-type brake system was removed and replaced with a modern AB-type system.
  • Side dump car #X504 was in the shop for annual testing and maintenance, along with some needed improvements.
