The Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and Museum is operated by a large number of dedicated volunteers. We do, however, have a small number of paid employees that work alongside the volunteers to keep the wheels turning. Below is a list of current job openings.

Railroad Maintenance Mechanic – Job Description

A Railroad Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for assisting in the maintenance and restoration of the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad’s historic railroad equipment, some that is over 100 years old. This position is primarily based out of the restoration shop, but will assist other railroad departments as needed.

DUTIES:

  • Performs troubleshooting and repairs on locomotives (steam and diesel), railcars, maintenance equipment, and vehicles.
  • Involved in railroad equipment restoration (metalworking, woodworking, painting.)
  • Assists staff and volunteers with track work when required.
  • Works alongside volunteers on various projects.
  • Confirms that passenger trains are prepared for volunteer crews to operate.
  • Assists with special events (Santa Express trains, Day Out with Thomas events.)
  • Performs other duties assigned by supervisors.
  • Maintains all assigned equipment in good repair, ready for use.
  • Shows up to work on time, properly attired and prepared to work.
  • Enthusiastically aids team members to accomplish department goals.
  • Works safely and efficiently and maintains a clean and orderly workplace.
  • Complies with instructions from superiors and works independently when required.
  • Complies with all policies outlined in the Employee Handbook or supplemental policy or guideline memos from the board of directors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Willingness to work at heights on ladders, scaffolds, man lifts or on top of rail mounted equipment.
  • Enthusiasm for the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad and its mission.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to carry out verbal or written instructions.
  • Familiarity with basic hand and power tool operation.
  • Experience in equipment restoration areas preferred but not required:
    • Welding/metalworking
    • Woodworking
    • Commercial spray painting
  • Possession of valid driver’s license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a CDL is preferred.
  • Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
  • Availability to work flexible hours. This position may require overtime or working an adjusted schedule (for example a Tuesday through Saturday work week.)
  • Positive attitude and personal confidence in management.
  • Ability to quickly respond to unplanned events or circumstances.
  • Willingness and desire to learn.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Full-time, minimum forty (40) hours per week. Shift may have variations due to changing projects, priorities, and other factors.
  • Many duties will require occasional outdoor work in all weather conditions during all seasons.
  • Extended periods of walking or standing.
  • Work requires regular social contact with team members, customers, volunteers, other staff members, and vendors.
  • Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, noise, and other substances/conditions.
  • Frequent work in restricted access spaces.
  • Frequent need for wearing and enforcing the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Lifting in excess of 50 pounds.

This job will also require becoming trained as a train service crew member. Train crew members are subject to pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing.

Track Foreman – Job Description

A Track Foreman is responsible for leading the maintenance and rehabilitation of our historic railroad line that dates back over 100 years. This position is based out of the restoration shop, with most work occurring outside along the 14 miles of railroad right-of-way. Work includes not only the railroad track itself, but also the right-of-way, including tree trimming and drainage.

DUTIES:

  • Effectively leads and coordinates track maintenance team comprised of both employees and volunteers.
  • Performs repairs and rehabilitation on track and right-of-way to provide a safe and scenic train ride experience.
  • Ensures compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules, inspects and maintains track and right-of-way to those standards.
  • Oversees and performs troubleshooting and repairs on track maintenance equipment and vehicles.
  • Prepares periodic reports for the B&SVRR Chief Mechanical Officer, General Manager, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA.)
  • Reports to and collaborates with Chief Mechanical Officer to plan railroad track/right-of-way repair and restoration projects.
  • Interacts with the general public/customers/volunteers/other staff members on a daily basis.
  • Aids staff and volunteers with shop/mechanical work when necessary.
  • Develops a network through other tourist railroads to procure parts and services, and to share knowledge.
  • Assists CMO with development of, and adheres to, an operating budget for the track maintenance department.
  • Conducts snow removal when needed.
  • Assists with set up, operation, and tear down of special events (such as Santa Express trains, Day Out with Thomas events.)
  • Maintains all assigned equipment in good repair, ready for use.
  • Shows up to work on time, properly attired and prepared to work.
  • Enthusiastically aids team members in accomplishing department projects and goals.

  • Previous railroad track and right-of-way maintenance experience is preferred.

  • Capable of developing and maintaining required inspection and preventative maintenance programs.
  • Familiarity with hand and power tool operations.
  • Experience in right-of-way and equipment maintenance areas preferred:
    • Torching/Welding
    • Chainsaws, trimmers, and snowblowers
    • End loader
    • Electrical
  • Possession of valid driver’s license. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a CDL is required.
  • Organizational skills and careful attention to detail.
  • Availability to work flexible hours.
  • Positive attitude and personal confidence in management.
  • Ability to quickly respond to unplanned events or circumstances.
  • Willingness and desire to learn.

  • Work requires regular social contact with team members, customers, volunteers, other staff members, and vendors.
  • Frequent exposure in a shop setting to soot, dust, oil, paint, noise, and other substances/conditions.
  • Frequent need for wearing and enforcing the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Extended periods of walking or standing.
  • Lifting in excess of 75 pounds.

This position will require becoming trained as a train service crew member. Train crew members are subject BSVRR rules training, and both pre-employment and random drug and alcohol testing. This position will also require becoming certified as a track inspector. Certification training will be provided if needed.
